Subject title: Nishrek's sketchbook

Hi All
I am begginer (what is obvious when you check my drawings). Now I want to focus on figure drawing. Anatomy and heads/hands
Also i suck at the proportions/relations and shading I have to improve here a lot.
I want to post some older stuff, to know if there is any progress. And the best gauge is objective and unbiased opinion of somebody else
Okay...
So, here is my stuff. I want to apologize for not the best quality of scans, but my scanner is a very uncooperative beast. At least when scanning pencil :/

Some older stuff first
Spoiler: show
Some generic "undead rider'. It has awful body proportions and perspective
Image
A knight vs skeleton fight
Image
Drawn from reference
Image
Even though piture is not so bad, the left dude looks like he was dropping the sword instead of fighting :/
Image
Some random old gesture drawing
Image
It was supposed to be dwarf and elf (bonus points for recognizing genders!)
Image
Try of drawing some dynamic pose
Image
Pic inspired by diablo II game, assasin class (done without reference IIRC)
Image
Image

Present state
Spoiler: show
Hands without reference
Image
Faces drawn from reference photos. Using soft pencil here was a bad idea...

Well that's all folks.
Thanks for any feedback/critique :)

How much older is the "older stuff" though?

Anyways, welcome to the forums Nishrek, I hope you'll enjoy your stay here :).

Some are few months back, some over a year. Unfortunately I had some gap when I did not practice :/
But now I think I've chosen poorly pics
Because newer drawings are done from reference maybe I should have pasted some older drawings from reference, to have a good comparison
Will do this next time when I will be uploading some newer stuff

There was some hiatus because of real-world problems...
Some new pics
Tried to clean this stuff a little, but my scanner clearly hates pencil drawings

I feel ya' when it comes to scanners. If you can why not try taking a picture if you have a decent camera.

I like the character in the gi.

Now Iam workin on "100 Sketches Challenge" by Doghateburger.
Because I do not want to crosspost, I will post here only "milestones", to show progress (I hope there is some!). All cam be see there!
i tried a pen with this pics. For me pen is much difficult than pencil, because is permanent (as you can see here, I often sketch first very loosely). So I draw by pencil, then finished wit a pen. like a true comic artist, yay, I am a pro now! Yeah, right...
Anyway this was hell lot of scanning. I want tomorrow finish 100
Well, I hope you will enjoy this

#1 Maybe better I hide this...

One of my first tries to draw something in perspective. I need some angular object for this. So there you have it. Whatever this thing is...

I am trying to draw some more dynamic poses (with some forshortening) now...

Pics below are drawn without reference.
Chasing demon. Or dragon. or some weird lizard. You choose

I don't like the neck here. It is too elongated. Not sure about proportions also

This one is a scribble. I think I have to draw some anatomy stuff again

you should keep posting in the 100 sketches thread!

Anyway, keep it going! I think you should try and be looking to get the gesture and proportions down, it feels like you're kind of getting caught up in the contour and details. Don't worry about that stuff yet! try and figure out a structure that works for ya:D

Thanks!
I have some stuff to post there, but it is unscanned yet. Recent drawings are drawn with a mechanical pencil, so scans are clean.
Pics for "100 skecthes" are done with a "normal" pencil so they need addtional processing. I have found that "inking" them with pen gives better results, than cleaning it after scanning. I'll post them soon
LuisEC wrote:I think you should try and be looking to get the gesture and proportions down,

Yeah, my proportions (and anatomy) are weird and I have to improve them. A lot.

A perspective excercise. Well, it sucks. Perspective lines are too oblique, angles too acute...
The good news, I can only improve from here :)

Keep it up, you should take a look a t some anatomy books like Andrew Loomis' figure drawing for all its worth. Try to understand the human body and remember it and then its much easier to draw the body. Also try to think in shapes and don't get to focused the outline. Sometimes a small hint(stroke) can do the job. And my last tip is to draw more looser. its seems like you're really fixed on your pencil and that way you lines get al cracky en straight and they don't suggest movement but stiffness. Try to draw with your whole arm!

Well I think I know some (theoretical of course) anatomy stuff. The problem is that I have trouble to apply them to my drawings. It looks very easy when you read about them, but the problem is when you try to place them on more dynamic pose.

Yeah that's my problem. But when I draw gestures very loose, they end so messy that I wouln't belive what it is hadn't I just rawn them. like some doodles. Lines drawn few times in place, blurred shapes. I scan some of them someday.

Well, here it comes

Another take on a previous picture/pose. I ran out the paper so the right figure is shorter than the left. I tried to change them into an adult vs a child, instead two adults as I planned.
Image

Some 90 second gestures. I have a problem with them. I think they look worse than 30s ones. Because they are much longer than typical 30s, I try to draw them in detail. Of course I do not have enough time for that :/

NIshrek, this is a great sketchbook. You have a lot of knowledge and study of anatomy which is shown in your drawings. But I think sometimes your figures are a bit off-balanced and stilted. You might want to try doing some more gesture drawings to keep the "frame" that the anatomy is built on consistent. Although, I have to say you've improved a lot since the beginning of your sketchbook. Don't stop drawing.

BTW, if you need some advice on gestures from someone a lot better than me, here is Proko's CSI video that gives an introduction to gestures: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74HR59yFZ7Y
