Hi everybodeh, this will be my first time creating a sketchbook online so if I do something wrong or post too much just let me know.

I'm going to keep it short and just go straight for the info. In my current situation I'll pretty much have 24/7 free time to draw for the next 6 months. The problem is, I give in to impulse way too fast so I get distracted by movies and games alot, which cuts from drawing hours. One of the main reasons for this thread is to motivate me to work harder I guess. I've been drawing pretty much my whole life (20 years old), never too serious tho. Its just recently that I got into digital arts. Started early december I think, tried to learn basics off photoshop and some other stuff.

Here are some of my sketches/doodles and 1 or 2 "finishes" pieces for this month. Usually when I try rendering the sketch I pretty much always give up the first 30min- hour. You'll probably notice what I mean :/

Some more "art" with some comments.
Spoiler: show
Image
An attempt at Kingdom Hearts fan art that I completely gave up on during the whole rendering part. I'm not sure why I keep quiting like that. Maybe its because I dont think it looks good enough or I keep getting frustrated because I dont know how to make it look good/right.

Image
Tried to paint/draw turtle from reference. As you can see it didn't go too well. Gave up on it prematurely aswell.

Image
Blocked in the shapes and rendered it with a soft round brush, I'm not that comfortable with a hard round yet. For some reason when ever I paint with it my lines/shapes look "spiky" and skratchy if that makes sence.

Image
A portrait I did of Natalie Portman at the start of the month. Pretty satisfied with this one but there's still a whole bunch I could improve on.

Well thats about it for this month. Feel free to ask any questions. I'm also available on Skype if you want an art buddy or if want to tutor someone ( I'd be your perfect guinea pig XD). Skype username is same as here. Anyways gonna go doodle some more while I eagerly await for your comments and criticism. Peace out and thanks for reading =)

Hey there,

Very cool start. :) I think it's cool that you've got so much work focusing on the creative side of it.

Do you do many studies? I see a few in there. I'd suggest throwing some more in to try and strengthen your fundamental skills in areas like figure drawing, perspective, value and color. That way you might feel more comfortable dedicating a few hours to a piece to try and apply what you've been learning. But keep up that creative work, it'll help you avoid burnout I think!

Good luck in your 6 mo journey. :)

Thanks for your kind words and advice. As you probably guessed, I dont do many studies. I've done a few but they're pretty sloppy and unorganized. Tried some figure drawing over at pixelovely, did the class modes and man the 30 sec ones are super tough. I'll post a couple of them so you'll know what I mean ^^

Here are a couple of the 30 sec ones. On some of them I didn't even manage to finish them and on others I have no idea what the pose is supposed to look like.

Besides these "studies". I've been reading some art books as well. A couple books from James Gurney and Drawing from the right side of the brain but I probably need to take notes since they wont stick otherwise.

Heya,

Yeah, that stuff is good! I'm sure you've watched a lot of tutorials and things, but there's a massive amount of great info floating around out there. Gurney is awesome and I know a lot of people recommend Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.

You may have seen this one, but here's Sycra's tips to himself if he was starting over: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxZbsLBd3oU It's got a lot of cool resources in there.

So I'd suggest keeping up the creative drawing while throwing in those studies. Just attack problems with your curiosity and try to figure out why something looks a certain way or what's different about your drawing than the reference or master work or whatever. It's about being able to deconstruct the world visually and recompile it however you want.

Just a few tips though. Do whatever works for you! I've found that I got hung up on certain people's advice early on and sometimes that was a bad thing. So just explore and learn. :)

Good luck!

Thank you so much for your tips and advice Eek, I really do apreciate it greatly. Also your thought about the whole deconstructing and recompiling things visually is really cool. Will keep that in mind next time I draw/paint.

Some of my work for today.

Just a quick update.

Last night I was working on this sketch, took me 6 layers and over an hour to get it to look semi decent, and I was having a real hard time with the anatomy. I really need to study it alot more. Kinda hoping you guys could take a look and give me a few pointers. My main struggle was the left arm of the front character, couldn't get the right perspective/angle and proportions. Feel free to criticise anything else that comes to mind. Also been doing this pelvis "study" for the last two days. I've probably spent way too much time on it.

You've got a bit of a knack for rendering I think. :) That study is looking really nice.

For the sketch, this is where your studies of muscles, skeleton and foreshortening will come in. When you start to understand how things connect a little better, things like this will be much easier. My suggestion: Look at your own arm in a mirror! Then compare that to a picture of how the muscles work in that arm. You could also construct the arm in very simple boxes to get a better idea about the perspective/foreshortening.

Here's a (quick) example:

(Mine's not actually grasping the guy, but you get the idea)

You'll start to be able to intuitively tackle stuff like that once you've thought about the structure for a while. Hope that makes some kinda sense.

Thanks for the tips and advice Eek, I really do apreciate it. Sketchdump incoming. Made a couple thumbnails and decided to sketch them out on a higher resolution. My knowledge of foreshortening, perspective, angles etc is still severly lacking. Really need to study up on them. If any of you guys are interested in a study partner please feel free to add me on skype.

I love your sketches, they're really awesome!!! Can I ask what kind of brush you use? It looks almost like ink and it's very smooth.

I pretty much only use 3 brushes so far. Hard round with opacity and size set to pen pressure, the one I use to sketch and do the lines. Hard round without the opacity on pen pressure, rarely use this. Last one is a soft round with both opacity and size on, mainly used for blending and rendering.

Decided to give it another try. Another 1000 of these and I might be able to make it look closer to the reference. Sort of rushed it on the right fork.

The silverware looks pretty good ....Sketches too... and basically everything :D
It would look better if you spent more time on it, there's no need to rush ;)

I see improvement on that last post, even if it's quiet rushed like Welume said. Look at the female faces, especially the one at the right. She look prettier than the others he did couple post ago !
Keep up man !!!

Yeah those are definatly too sharp, will keep that in mind for the next time.

Kinda slacked off today when I was supposed to finish the rough painting from yesterday -.- Last time I set up a goal, will never follow thru so whats the point anyways..... The only thing I did was an animal reference/gesture drawing and a regular reference of a woman.
