Subject title: Kuronuma's new

So yea, thought I'd start a proper sketchbook now :).

Here's something I did today to get me started, for me to get back into it after such a long time..

It's from reference ofc.. my friend Sue. A dgital painting so I can get a feel of it once again..
I can see there's something wrong about the face but am unsure as to what exactly it is.

I think it's that left eye, it looks shrunken instead of foreshortened, I think you did this because her face is turning slightly?

What's up man, I just got back to drawing and the forum as well. Here is a little help with your friend's portrait.

The first Image is just a rough sketch of the proportions in the Loomis book "drawing the head and hands"

-make sure the nose, eyes, mouth, and chin are all level and parallel with each other
-I rendered all of the shadows based on the nose shadow. I don't know If you were going for complete realism but with such a harsh shadow from the nose there would be plenty more shadows from other planes of the face in the same direction
-remember that the ear is in line with the eyebrow and bottom of the nose when looking straight on. The way you had the ear would suggest a strong tilt down of the head
-The biggest fault of all was the relation of the eyes to the rest of the face. You can simply check the proportions by looking at relationships between the part that you want to fix to parts in the immediate vicinity and comparing to a guide like the first image above. (example- the line formed from the tear-duct to the corner of the nose should be parallel and of equal distance on the opposite side of the face; which was fixed in the paint-over.) Usually when you do this something else comes loose and needs to be checked with its relationship to something else.)
-I am allergic to color so no help with that

Welcome back.

Thank you guys for advice!

The left eye is definitely an issue..
Anyway I gave it a lot of thought and decided to post the original photo here (since she posted it on facebook it shouldn't be a problem, right?)

I didn't really compare it right next to each other or on top of each other cos that feels like cheating to me

Here's a paint over:
Image
The biggest thing I changed was the tilt of the head. It's the biggest, most obvious angle in a portrait, that being the case it can throw everything else off if you don't get that right from the start. Everything else I did was super subtle finessing of shapes(and it could still do with a bit more), but the subtleties make a huge difference, especially on a young girl's face.

Also, don't be afraid to put the images side by side, that's how you make careful observations. I agree that overlaying your painting is kinda cheating though

wow, thanks! i can see the tilt clearly now thanks to that little cross you made..

I won't go over it now, it's kinda my first portrait ever and I made a mistake in setting up my ps, so it's in crap quality.. I will get back to this one in some time and maybe it will be easier for me and maybe the result will be better :)

Odd, i thought the horizontal/eye line had to be at a 90 degree angle with the vertical/chin-to-forehead line lest the face would look inevitably off. But both in the photo and Ambiguity's paintover that is clearly not the case with the angle (at least i don't think it is) yet both look good/not off.
What is nature, but a miserable little pile of forms!?

I think you're right to assume that, my vertical line is actually off(I was zoomed out when I did it), and a perfectly vertical line doesn't accurately represent the curvature of the face, nor the perspective the features like the nose anyway.

Oh well another attempt at portrait.. seems a bit dull though and I am not nearly good enough to translate life into the painting, duh. :)

Looks great man! I'd darken the shadow on her shoulder far more, but I think you did a really good job. You're definitely improving

So... tried to approach portrait making a bit differently (as Sycra said in the video :P) and made a self portrait, ehm.

It's still far from perfect but I tried to focus on values and painted in greyscale (I then tweaked it a bit to that brownish weird colour - it looked more natural to em that way).. Anyway if anyone sees smt obviously wrong there, do not hesitate to tell me :)

(oh and I don't really like to draw myself cos you know.. not the prettiest subject to paint :D)

i think the nose blends in too much into the far cheekbone, i can hardly tell the shape of the nose...

other than that so far you look great, i mean the portrait does, that doesnt mean you dont of course.... :)

That's really well done. Love the really strong darks in it. Not sure I agree on the nose, it blends together, but it's not distracting, and there's juuuuuust enough information at the bridge of the nose and the tip that my eye completes the shape.

I think the thing with self portraits is half that it's a subject that's always available, and half that it's a subject that has so many preconceived things attached to it. Everyone has an opinion on how they look, and breaking through all those insecurities and thoughts to draw/paint accurately is a really valuable exercise. That, or harnessing them if that's the intent of the piece.

For suggestions, I think that the really sharp edges on the face would look better if they were slightly softer, especially right next to the really soft-edged and vague scarf. The scarf might stand to have a tiny bit more attention to the top as well, since it's next to some very detailed and well defined areas and the large difference in detail is a bit jarring, and, for me at least, kinda distracts me from appreciating it when I notice it.

Anyways, just suggestions, and there's a really good chance that I've got no idea what I'm talking about. Great work either way!

Thanks guys!

Yea the nose was a pain but I also thought it gave just enough information to see it clearly.. and about the scarf.. I got fed up with it and I had to go to the choir practice so I had to stop there :).

As I look at it now it seems just a bit.. I dont know... wavy?

And well YES you are your most faithful model anyways :P.

That's adorable in a weird, slightly alien way. I think it's mostly the face.
