I will try anyways! I think I need to start making my own brushes... I could use some tutorial on that lol
Maybe I could ease up my life by making some custom brush

btw lol for deviantArt pm xD

i can just paint in greyscale, and i use just a hard edged square brush, it can be pretty handy :D

i know you!!! lol xD

I can has need help

Image
I have no idea what am I doing

Is.. composition.. kinda okay?

I generally need any suggestion for making compositions. For example, should I here add something that points to our eye in the front so that I have a clear division between the 3 planes.. fore/middle/background or smth smth
Here it looks like I only have middle and background :|

Gonna finish that rock thingy till the end of week at least that's the plan

Didn't post what I've did with that study

Image

From left to right in first row I like 1st a bit, 4th colors and 5th the scene itself
In the second I like the 1st, those rocks on 3rd and that's that xD

Anatomy didn't work out as I tend to spend too much time on it and I just couldn't afford working that small.. but hell, I like that stuff.. planes of the head or whatever haha
Good thing is that the artist who did that painting has some really nice portraits, so I guess I am going to study anatomy on those :P

I think it's quite evident that your confidence in digital work has increased in leaps and bounds, the studies look quite nice. You may want to deviate from the originals however by adding more vibrant colours, adding landmarks and/or focal points that aren't in the original references, or breaking up the environment in order to create something of a different genre. That would be a good way to test not only the knowledge you've gained, but also your imagination and creativity owo

I am aiming to kinda apply this to different genre, like painting the sci-fi landscape with same kind of color/technique as some specific master painting. Can't remember who was the artist where I saw that, he/she kinda just took any master painting, messed around with shapes line drawing over it.. and then just used the colors form the original to create his own stuff haha

The only thing is, I still don't have confidence to try anything of that sort XD

I will try to mess around with that rock/meteor-sketch thing a bit.. for example to paint the sky according to what I was trying in the study, just different colors. Or maybe mess around with rocks and undercolors.. gonna see later on what can I come up with

and yeah, thanks for the comment :D

It's awesome how much you've improved in such a short amount of time, I feel like I could learn a thing or two from you XD I seem to improve very slowly (probably due to drawing what I want all the time and never doing studies)

Keep up the good work :D your sketchbook is really inspiring!

^ Thank you guys! I appreciate it a lot :)

I am trying a bit.. but not enough I would say D:

Now.. after a month or so of TOTAL procrastination and god damn Heroes of Might and Magic 3.. xD
I finally started working a bit more.. not that I wasn't working at all in the meantime, but it was really just a tad of drawing here and there :|

First of course, Anatomy master copy thinges..

I am now on the Head. Sometimes I do it right, I get the planes of the face a bit better now and how it all works, the angles of head [Something I never realized lol], muscles a bit etc.. but my drawings are still long way behind haha
Plan is, once I pass all the things, to start training on models, i.e. to kinda make a construction over a photo of someones head etc lol
Or to do a study of construction and color at the same time

ps: There are some nasty fails in there.. but hey, need to show it all for myself :p

Spoiler: show

Now a bit of spitpaints..

I am a tad faster and they overall have a bit more sense.. but heck, I still need a lot to improve

Spoiler: show
First an older one.. Friendly Mammoth

Bulldozer and 75

Full of arrows

Lost astronaut

Old King
Image

In the end.. the little Icy thing from before, from that sketch..

Image

I need to finish this! Been messing on it here and there every day, not much work done.. just a lot of experimenting with some weird lines/color patches.. trying to guide the eye over the image or smth smth
Dunno if it will work.. and what's the composition atm.. but gonna try to make it work out

Comments, suggestions, critics.. plox :]

Nice work man, I think you should focus on painting and drawing from life for awhile. Painting from life will give you knowledge of how light and color occur in the real world, and will also help you understand form and values better.

I wish my camera was a bit better so that I can capture some of my own photos to use as a references for that :(

Something that I tend to do now is not to use highly saturated colors as I think the colors aren't that much saturated in real life [Except when there is direct light on the object]
Like that on the color picker picture under.. avoiding to cross over that line unless it's really needed

I will surely do some studies from real life but not atm. Currently my focus is mainly this anatomy thingy.. I've been stretching it for far too long haha

Speaking of which, here is one more paper from today, gonna try to do one more
I've went a bit more detailed this time.. found it fun to experiment with the shading here and there

shaky camera ftw

Moar heads for now.. tomorrow I start with eyes, mouth etc

Working hard I see :), you might wanna spend a little more time really focusing on those upshots though. You gotta think really hard about your 3D geometry when doing extreme angles, and don't be afraid to let things get obscured(the nose over the eye trips everyone up):

Yeah, when the nose goes over its showtime xD
I will practice that once I start doing drawing from photos or rl reference. Anyways, that is a good tip, thanks! :D

Anatomy thingies from today, the eyes.. guess I won't draw eyes as ovals anymore haha

I like this one a lot because it feels like the line weight and that lil' bit of shading turned out pretty good. Level up lol

Had more or less two wasted days.. but today it was a good one

Did 4 spitpaints, 3 failed.. but one kinda came out right! :D

Beside this I did draw a bit traditionally, the anatomy master copies.. only this to show

And I did paint a bit on that icy meteor, but nothing to show there hehe

Did 3 spitpaints today, one was a total fail.. gonna try it again now, I think

Here are the two that are done

Golden arrow - Had to be lightning
I like how his pose looks kinda okay [ minus the left knee lol ] and the eyes/mouth which I painted in.. mmm 5s xD

Image

Giant peach - Had to go kawaii lol
I like the bliss in the background haha

And anatomy thingy copies.. went over the nose, was quite fun! Spent a while on it :)

Today I started going a bit more efficiently and I hope to keep it up at least for a week like this [Excluding weekends]
Mostly plan is to limit myself to 1h of work for whatever, anatomy/spitpaints/color/composition/personal and then back haha

Spitpaints were mostly fails.. not posting them :3

Anatomy thingy from today and yesterday
I thought I was faster dammit.. it took me an hour to draw that one with mouths
Second pic with ears is mostly smth that kinda represents the first phase of my drawing.. first fail then try again :P

Was messing around with that ice again.. setting up the mood

Any suggestions for the composition and all other things appreciated C:

keep up the anatomy studies, they are just so important and you have already improved a lot. I also like your last paintings, you seem to have a good understanding of colours :) some more practice and you will be able to du really stunning pieces

Thanks Maty! :D

I am currently doing trunk for the anatomy studies.. and it is much more translating the text and making my own notes than actual drawing :[

And.. nah, I am still way away from the level of color understanding than what I want to achieve for the time being, but thanks :D
Currently I am doing some color studies to boost that a bit, this one is a bit more serious ;p

So far I've put ~2.5h in this, going really slowly :|
Did a bit more details just on the sky and top of the plant.. as it was close kek
Spoiler: show
Image

My question is.. Do you guys think it would be contra-productive if I would keep on going kinda detailing it.. not like super detailing, but a fair deal of details. Now I know what Anthony Johnes said, not just him but others too.. about this type of studies, but I kinda feel that I could learn a bit more about color and painting if I keep on playing this "guess the color" game :P

What do you guys think?

Artwork is: Cupidon by William Adolphe Bouguereau
That guy is pretty amazing, check his stuff.. you'll be blown away o.o

After today's copying of that master painting I decided not to go with the detailing all around but just focus on the forms, colors and hidden tricks ;P

Although I might split the painting on half, do that detailed over a period of time for relaxation.. and leave second half all smudgy.. or do a study on it, just for the sake of LOL's xD

Anyways, a small update for today.. spitpaint - Pileup

This is a definitely a sketchbook of improvement. You seem to pick up things fast the fact that you've just started painting. I've been 'doing this' for 7 years and I'm still struggling :P

Just start exploring it more in depth, all you see here are pic's where I really tried to make something better.. while the rest of paintings are like couple levels under on my actual level xD

I also do the quick ones, just to mark out the form and try to replicate shapes, but I'm not showing those :3
These I show are "showcase" studies :P
Just for praise and glory mwhahah

I finished that master study thing, but mostly I have text.. which I won't spam here xD
In the meantime I am trying more and more to paint mostly with 100% Opacity/Flow and rely on the picking colors correctly and pen pressure

Here are couple of okay-ish spitpaints till I get something else haha

This one's really cool.
And I can tell from a earlier painting to this one, there's a cool improvement on the light and focal, you should really continue in that way!
All you need is a good punch in the face
